Swaledale cheese has been made in the Dale that bears its name for centuries. It is thought that cheese making was first brought to the Yorkshire Dales in the 11th century by Cistercian monks who arrived from Normandy and settled in the local abbeys. Welcome to the home page of Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team. The 6th July 1968 saw the first recorded incident and the origins of mountain and cave rescue in Swaledale and Wensleydale. In the following years SMRT has developed from the 12 local people to the team of today comprising around 40 volunteer members capable of reacting at short notice and so providing an invaluable asset to the local community.
